What is Functional Nutrition?

The evidence is compelling that the root cause of most chronic disorders lies within our lifestyle choices, particularly our daily food choices. Functional Nutrition uses food to address the underlying factors contributing to chronic disease. This holistic approach focuses on nutrition, lifestyle choices, environmental exposures, relationships, sleep, work, movement, and other contributing factors as they relate to health and wellness. “Functional Nutrition emphasizes healthful eating personalized to YOUR genetics, lifestyle, environment, and health concerns. Functional Nutrition offers effective strategies and tools to improve your health, including weekly food and shopping schedules, healthful recipes, and recommendations about cooking and food storage methods, as well as steps to achieve mindful eating” (Source: The Institute for Functional Medicine).

We Help You Build Healthy Habits & Realistic Routines

You are invited to be an active participant in your journey to health. Together, we work to determine and address the root causes of your current symptoms. Your success in making long-term dietary and lifestyle changes require realistic action steps, goals, and support. We are here to help you with the development of healthy habits and realistic new routines, empowering you to overcome challenges and experience the rewards of your hard work.

We utilize a Wellness, Functional and Holistic Nutrition & Gerson Therapy approach, which examines underlying imbalances of various dis-ease conditions. Those imbalances arise as environmental inputs such as diet, nutrients (including air and water), exercise, and trauma are processed by one’s body, mind, and spirit through a unique set of genetic predispositions, attitudes, and beliefs.

This approach encompasses a comprehensive health and nutrition history, lifestyle factors, stress, and more. By partnering with you during your journey, we assist you with exploring a new approach and perspective about true and long-term health.

*It is important however, to make very clear that we do not provide any medical advice and we do not diagnosis, treat, cure, prevent or heal any diseases or health conditions. Instead, we invite you to join us on a journey of exploration of your health through the lens of holistic living and nutrition! Wellness and Holistic Nutrition Consulting comprises a mixture of inquiry, listening, conversation, education, suggestions for experimentation, and considerations for choosing action to design your own course of action for your best health. We do an in-depth nutrition intake along with meal planning, grocery list and recipe creation and nutritional assessment as well as provide education about the role of food and nutritional supplements for your optimal health to address the root cause of your migraines and health concerns. Wellness and Holistic Nutrition Consulting is designed to empower you with the knowledge you need to work with your doctors and take charge of your health. We always encourage the people we work with to have a strong working relationship with a licensed health professional. We are here as a complement to your licensed medical provider’s work and role. We love what we do and we know that good lifestyle and nutrition advice can make a huge difference to how a person experiences their life. We are looking to identify underlying imbalances in the body that could be at the root of your health challenges and that when corrected can restore homeostasis — that beautiful state of balance that allows the body to thrive. Using lifestyle and nutrition we can support the body from the inside out!

 My Story

Meet Josette, MS, CNS®, CN, LDN

My health challenges started when I was one month old and hospitalized with viral meningitis and subsequently received IV antibiotics. I suffered from colic and jaundice as an infant. As a child I appeared healthy, however the effects of consuming a Standard American Diet consisting of highly processed and inflammatory food-like substances contributed to an eventual decline in my physical and mental health.

At the age of 18, I developed chronic migraines while living in Panama as an exchange student. I averaged 25 migraine days per month. I have a genetic predisposition for migraines. My paternal grandmother, father, and younger brother had migraines, as well as family on my mother’s side. Over the next 10 years, doctors tried every possible migraine medication on me, eventually resorting to Botox injections, which involved a series of injections in the face and neck. All of these options were a dead end. In fact, the various medications and treatments only dampened the migraine frequency and led to a myriad of other symptoms and health problems. During this time, I completed a BA in Journalism and worked as a radio and television journalist and producer for NPR & PBS.

At the age of 25, I attempted to end my life. The physical and emotional toll of chronic migraines coupled with doctors giving up on me left me in a very dark place. Our family has a history of suicide; tragically both my maternal grandmother and aunt took their own lives. There are some underlying genetic imbalances in our family that may have been worsened by dietary and lifestyle choices, along with environmental factors.

In 2011, I started researching Functional Medicine and nutrition and slowly began putting the puzzle pieces together regarding why I was sick. After six years of experimentation and trial and error, I ended up utilizing both the Gerson Therapy and Functional Medicine to successfully heal my migraines and other health problems.

I no longer experience the disabling pain of migraines and I am on a mission to partner with other migraineurs in their own personal healing journey. I feel compelled to offer you hope. Don’t give up.

This journey has led me to dedicate myself to helping other migraineurs. As a result, I co-founded The Herdell Migraine Institute LLC, which is dedicated to sharing our family’s story of healing and helping guide migraineurs on the path to healing. Additionally, I offer functional nutrition, lifestyle and nutrigenetic coaching for clients in my private practice, Functional Wellness for Migraines. I hold a Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from the University of Western States, am a Licensed Dietetic Nutritionist in Maryland, am a Certified Nutrition Specialist by the BCNS, and am a National Board-Certified Health and Wellness Coach by the ICHWC. My training includes 1000 hours of clinical experience working in Dr. Kara Fitzgerald’s Functional Medicine & Nutrition residency and a mentorship with Nutrition Supervision Experts.

While I am a licensed dietician-nutritionist in the State of Maryland (LDN DX4919), because many other states, including Idaho, do not currently recognize or offer the option for licensure for individuals with my training and the Certified Nutrition Specialist® designation, I am not currently licensed in any other states outside of Maryland. Therefore, while I am located in the state of Idaho, I am unable to refer to myself as a Licensed Dietician-Nutritionist despite my training.
